There's A Top To Every Hill

Happy Saturday! If you’re new to THE CRAZY QUEST, you may wish to read about it here. Basically, I’m tracing my journey as I attempt to answer the question: What would you do if you didn’t know you couldn’t do it?
This week of training: 98 miles
THERE’S A TOP TO EVERY HILL
A while back I was riding out in the country, cranking very slowly up a pretty steep hill. I heard another bike approaching from behind; the rider called out a greeting and I recognized my friend Jeff’s voice. As he passed, he offered some profound encouragement: Keep going. There’s a top to every hill.
That’s pretty good advice in cycling and in life. Sometimes the hills seem endless and progress agonizingly slow. Climbing hills is tough.
But my friend was right. I hate to admit it, but there’s a lot of wisdom in his words:
- No hill’s eternal. If you keep moving forward, you eventually reach the top.
- Speed’s less important than persistence.
- The only time you fail is when you quit.
- The harder the hill, the greater the satisfaction at the top.
If you’re climbing a tough hill right now, keep climbing! There IS a top, even if you can’t see it right now.
What lessons have you learned from climbing an especially difficult hill?
